Thanks so much for being my guest.  You have written a series of health books: weight loss, vitamin D benefits, Alzheimer's, Asthma.  Any more in the works?  Hello there...I was thinking of one on psoriasis and another on autism. Why? Because I received an email from an Ophthalmologist (MD) who read my Vitamin D3 book for fun that was a surprise to me. He said he had suffered from incurable psoriasis for years and it was so bad he could barely sleep and had to sleep on his stomach. He started taking 50,000 IU of D3 a day for two months and said he is completely cured. So I asked him to write a book review...and you can see it on amazon...his name is Dr. Donn Carroll and he gave it 5 stars.

As far as for writing a new book on autism.Although I discuss autism somewhat in the Vitamin D3 book, I have run across a few new facts that complete the autism puzzle for me. The biggest new fact has to do with asthma. I recently ran across a study where kids with the most severe asthma had lower D3 levels and MUCH DENSER lung tissue than other kids with mild asthma. This set off alarm bells in my head since I already knew and had successfully experimented with Vitamin D3 as the Bone and Joint remodeling hormone (which it is-it actually is not a vitamin-just misnamed). So if Vitamin D3 remodels bones and joints, why not lungs? 


So my new book on asthma discusses one Alaskan lady who was taking 30,000 IU of D3  per day and found it CURED her life long asthma. I found a few others on the Internet who said the same thing...Well to get to the autism book's premise...I finally realize that autism is caused by the mother's Vitamin D3 levels being critically low during the most important time of brain development and remodeling in the unborn baby-the few weeks before birth. What I now believe is that there is not enough Vitamin D3 in her system for the baby's brain tissue to be properly remodeled (whittled down) into a properly functioning normal brain. And in fact autistic children have larger than average brains. This fits nicely with the fact that there is a large peak of autistic births in March and October/November-the darkest months of the year when you factor in snow reflection of the winter months. Thus these would be the months when a mother's Vitamin D3 levels are at the lowest-I am assuming you all know that Vitamin D3 is created only when sun hits one's skin. Bottom line is that the bone and joint remodeling hormone that I call lung remodeling hormone for asthma sufferers is also likely brain remodeling hormone for expectant mothers.
What are your credentials as a health advocate? None, OTHER THAN MAYBE A CASE OF OCD WHEN IT COMES TO STUDYING DISEASES AND WORKING ON PUZZLES.....I USED TO LOVE TO WORK ON LARGE PUZZLES AS A KID.  I RESEARCH FOR THE FUN OF COMPLETING THE PUZZLE  NOT FOR MONEY... Since normal people are usually fixated on letters behind the name (like Phd which I say stands for People who Don't) and credentials and the school you went to.  I always add this statement in the description of the book section.
"This IS the better mousetrap! Most MD's get just a basic 4 years in Med School, then work to earn not learn. I've researched diseases and aging for 20+ years, with a 10 year stint where I spent 12 hrs/day everyday in the Northwestern Med School's library just reviewing clinical and scientific studies! .I've had 3 major papers published; the publishing journal has 5 Nobel Prizes between the editors. And described my papers as extremely exciting and of major importance! "
I do this to let people know that even though I never got degrees in anything related to science, that people who were tops in their field and were able to judge my arguments were quite impressed....you see the top people in a field could care less about your credentials.  Because they are able to evaluate what you say, they can discern between a self-taught excellent researcher opposed to an idiot from Harvard.  Lay people can't make this distinction and usually rely heavily on school names and letters behind the name. In case anyone is wondering I did get an MBA from Northwestern and did pass the CPA exam on the first try a long time ago. (I quit my science studies at college once I learned what I needed to know for research.  I had no stomach for the mindless memorization grind.  I was on a mission!-thus I have no degrees) 
But don't worry.  I write my books and theories so everyone can understand. As Einstein once said (supposedly), if you really understand something you can explain it to a 10 year old or your grandmother.
 Besides yourself, who is your favorite author for non-fiction health books?

I have just read a fantastic book about Vitamin K2 by  Kate Rheaume-Bleue called Vitamin K2 and the Calcium Paradox.  Parts of it blew me away, especially the part where she discusses how braces and cavities in kids are not the natural state of things in primitive societies or in the wild.  She mentions that vitamin K2 deficiency has caused us to have stunted jaws due to lack of calcium deposition and thus too many teeth for our smaller mouths as well as cavities. Primitive societies that eat grass fed animal products (which contain K2) do not have these problems and do not even have to brush their teeth!  
I also like the Vitamin D books by Dr. Hollick, especially his 99 cent interview.
To tell you the truth, vitamins are not going to help you that much, you just need to take enough of each to prevent problems. Doctors generally give good advice in this department.  Everyone should take all the vitamins in a multivitamin everyday with exception to iron unless anemic.  Read the labels.  Sometimes they stick iron into the multivitamin.  Excess iron can promote heart disease!  Pregnant women need extra  folic acid (vitamin B9) to prevent the birth defect spina bifida and other types of recommendations.
Taking lots of vitamins will not help you that much, but will prevent bad things from happening.

Now if you want some real positive changes, you'll need to experiment with hormones. Vitamin D3 is not a vitamin, but a hormone when mixed with the sun hitting your skin. In my D3 book I lay out an argument that the whole world is deficient in D3 and everyone needs more so as they get older. Lack of D3 tells your body winter is here and to hunker down and prepare for famine by overeating, getting depressed to save energy, not repairing things completely to conserve resources, etc. Low D3 levels lead to most diseases of mankind that are not completely aging related or cause by novel / de novo genetic mutations.

Other hormones you might want to experiment with:
Pregnenolone-The memory hormone.  It's a precursor to all your other steroid hormones. When given to old rats it boosts their memory to the level of the smartest young rats. It also alleviates social shyness in people.

DHEA- the most abundant precursor hormone to your other steroid hormones in the body.  It drops by about 80-90% from ages 20 to 60. Boost this up to the level of a 20 year old, and you will burn fat, build muscle, ward of many diseases, etc.  Read up on this hormone.  It is important.  It's a strong antioxidant and has anti-cancer properties.

melatonin- another hormone that declines dramatically as you age (by 90%) as your pineal gland calcifies.and likely is the signal to start menopause and rapid aging.  Careful, this makes you sleepy.  At 75mg a night, women can use it for birth control. It might also be able to stop Alzheimer's in its tracks which I discuss in my Alzheimer's book. This is a strong antioxidant with dramatic anti-cancer properties.

You have a permanent spot in the top ten nonfiction medicine books on Amazon.  Why do you think so many readers connect with your studies?  It is turning out that readers are curing themselves of all sorts of things like asthma, psoriasis, arthritis, etc., with high doses of vitamin D3.  I think it spreads by word of mouth. I just got an email from a guy in Brazil who is giving his mother high dose D3 as one part of her cancer therapy. He started taking 25,000 IU a day himself and after 2 weeks his several year problem of plantar fasciitis was cured.  (PF is a painful injury where the ball and bottom of your foot have a bruised nerve running through them that never heals and makes you limp. Another lady is having good results in her baby who had some sort of excess cavities syndrome. It really is amazing.

Name the biggest myth that you know in terms of health care.  "Make sure you use sun screen and avoid the sun"......This advice is killing us, causing epidemics of autism, asthma, obesity and allergies.  You really threw me a softball with that question!  Yeah, I did-got to be nice to the bestselling authors!
Name the worst things we can eat and do to our bodies.   
Actually eating meat is worse for you than smoking cigarettes....especially red meat.....this does not include fish..The healthiest vegetarians are not vegans, but those that who also enjoy milk and cheese (but no eggs), and fish.....I am a vegan except for cheese and milk which I love.  I decided not to eat fish from a moral angle, but I am  hypocrite.  I do take fish oil!!
If you could be interviewed by anyone in the media, whose show would you like to be on?
I personally would not like to appear on a show as a person.  I'd rather be just words or a voice or a written statement.  Maybe interviewed via phone by Dr. Oz whose show is sometimes quite good.
Can Vitamin D work as a topical ointment for sores or dry-fungus toenails?  I am guessing yes, but I cannot say for sure as when I put Vit D3 in my toenails I was also taking it internally.  It certainly seems logical and worth a try.  To really get the best effect, put a lot of D3 on the toenails then cover them with snipped off rubber fingers from surgical gloves and tape them on.  This way you would get a 24 hour treatment instead of just a few hours.
You are self-published on Amazon.  Care to share your experience with them?
Fantastic!  So easy to just whip up a book on WORD.  When you think it is ready for some sort of audience you just set up your Amazon self publishing account  and upload.  They will give you a free cover if you don't want to make one.  You don't have to spend a single penny to get your book out to millions of readers.  It is truly amazing.  If you price your book at 99 cents or 1.99  and it is good, there is no way any publisher can compete with you.  You can just tell all the agents, publishers, editors   etc to  f  off!  It's great!  I remember 10 years ago I approached an agent about publishing a book.  She asked if I was a known author and I said no.  She basically said do not ever call me again!!!  Get the last laugh and self publish on amazon and start your book off at 99 cents!!!  Take that agent!! Not a penny for you! I'm moving on!
So just for fun I made a really cheesy cover for free using GIMP2, a free program you can get off the net that is like photoshop.  For a cover, you can steal any of the millions of pictures on Google images.  I honestly have not spent a cent on my Vit D3 book that is now a medicine best seller and a hardcopy does not even exist!  Only in the cloud.  The great thing is you can update it any time you want!! So it is no longer like a snapshot in time of information which a hard copy book is, but more like a living diary that the author can tinker with everyday.  Now the question I have is if the author's changes get transmitted to the book that the customers keep in the cloud.  I know that the changes would not flow through to kindle copies.  I sold my book for months at the lowest possible price, 99 cents, and just recently bumped it up to 1.99.  I found no change in sales with the price increase, although I do have other books that sell for 2.99 and they sell slower.
What vitamins do you take on a daily basis?  Does your family and friends follow your regimen?
My father, a Stanford educated MD /urologist surgeon, used to think he knew everything about everything in medicine and laughed when I told him about publishing my first paper, "The Evolution of Aging".  In fact, he tried to suggest that I might be coming down with a disease my uncle had-manic depression!  Even though he could not understand the first page of my 60 page paper, I think I offended him when I told him he was "dumber than a rock."
That was back in about 1997.  Nowadays he pretty much takes what I tell him to and he is the better for it.  In fact, after he started taking D3 at 7,000 a day he just decided to quit drinking scotch, his favorite beverage for 30+ years.  His nasty  bruises went away from his aspirin regimen to prevent heart disease.
My mother and sister know me well from when I was little and thus do not trust me and do not follow my recommendations.  My sister has still not read my book even though she is as big as a house and obviously D3 deficient.
All my friends follow my advice initially and over time cut back on this on this or that, probably like typical patients.  They get their own ideas over time.

Fact 8- It was in the early 1980’s that doctors have been telling us to avoid the sun to prevent skin cancer and to use lots of high-strength sun block anytime one went outside.

So the bottom line simple theory developed from these facts is that if you don’t get enough Vitamin D3, evolution expects a winter-long famine might come soon and tries to get you to hibernate until the spring and summer sun returns. Thus if you never get back in the sun again after winter you will suffer from a permanent case of what I call theHuman Hibernation Syndrome. A subset theory of this can also explain the many other diseases and conditions caused by low vitamin D3 levels is what I call- the Incomplete Repair Syndrome. This is a syndrome where evolution has designed us to stingily conserve our critical resources and only uses them very sparingly to fix injuries and do common maintenance of the body. This stinginess leads to incomplete repairs and maintenance that will be completed just enough to get by. The body will stay in this mode until it gets the sunshine hormone signal that tells it that resources will now again be abundant, and the body can go ahead and undo  the incomplete repairs and maintenance and redo them thoroughly, properly, and completely, using all the resources necessary.

So that’s it. If you, like most people, have chronically low Vitamin D3 levels all year and eventually all life long, you will eventually get depressed, obese, sick, and will begin to accumulate injuries that never completely or perfectly heal, and maintenance issues that never go away! And since 1980 when doctors started convincing us to stay out of the sun and use strong sun block, a huge portion of the US population has become obese! And a lot of other problems are becoming apparent like an explosive rise in autism, asthma, and even dangerous peanut allergies!

So that’s the underlying theory for this whole book in a (pea?)nut shell.  Now let’s begin with a little background..

Let me give you a several paragraph history about Vitamin D3 that might get you interested in knowing more…

Vitamin D has been known to exist in some manner by mankind supposedly back to antiquity , but it wasn’t until around 1650 that the first case of Vitamin D deficiency was described scientifically (called Ricketts). And it wasn’t until 1920 that a scientist that experimented with dogs that were raised 100% indoors and completely out of the sun, were found to get Ricketts. The scientist also figured out that if you fed them a little cod liver oil that they would not get Ricketts. Ricketts, it was discovered, could also be cured by exposure of the dogs to sunlight (which induces the production of Vitamin D3 from a D2 oil on their fur which they consume by grooming.)  Later it was also discovered that the active compound in cod liver oil was none other than Vitamin D3!
